| Alexandra Park CC is a
club rich in history. Formed in 1888 by Ernest Cawdron, the club grew steadily and
by the 1930s had become one of the strongest clubs in London. The feats of the
club's opening batsmen Len Newman and Con Davies contributed enormously to the club's
reputation at this time. During his career, Len scored 250 centuries and in 1935 set
a world record of 4138 runs in a season. Con scored 126 centuries and as a slow,
left arm bowler took over 5000 wickets in a career, which lasted until 1971. Len continued playing into the 1950s, by which time Alexandra Park had maintained their reputation as one of the strongest club sides. In fact, in 1948 it was claimed that the club put out more elevens each week than any other in the country. Following the earlier advent of league cricket, in 1979 AP entered the Middlesex Cricketers' League - now, of course, the Middlesex Championship. During a memorable run in the 1990s, the 1st XI won the 2nd and 1st Division Championships in successive years (1996 and 1997). Several club members have played representative cricket for the League and the CCC and some have played county cricket, including Con Davies (Warwickshire), Doug Newman and Steve Poulter (Middlesex) and Mark Scott (Worcestershire). The club places emphasis on both the playing and social sides of the game. One of the club's lynchpins is the annual Kent Tour in August. The 2001 tour will be the 65th in a series, which goes back as far as 1921. Everyone at AP is looking forward to an exciting and enjoyable 2001 season. |
